Everything You Need to Know Before The Multi-Day Jungle Hike

Deep in the Colombian jungle hides a city older than Machu Picchu – but it won’t give up its secrets easily…

What is the Lost City Trek?

The Lost City, or Ciudad Perdida, is an ancient archeological site tucked into the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountians. Built by the Tayrona civilization around 800 AD, it’s sacred place still inhabited by local indigenous communities today. But unlike other ruins, getting there isn’t a day trip – it’s a sweaty, muddy, soul-stretching 4- to 6-day jungle hike. And that’s what makes it so special!

How to get there?

Start your journey from Santa Marta, where tour companies organize everything for you: transport, food, sleeping arrangements, guides and a lot of snacks.

You’re required to go with a licensed guide. Solo treks aren’t allowed due to Indigenous land protections and the remote nature of the hike
Most tours include a bumpy 4×4 ride to the trailhead in Mamey, where the jungle adventure begins

What to expect on the Trek?

Each day, you’ll hike through lush jungle, across rivers, and up steep hills, often in high humidity. Along the way, you’ll sleep in jungle camps, in bunk beds with mosquito nets. Expect:

  • 20-25km of hiking per day (some steep!)
  • River crossings
  • Tropical heat, sudden rain showers, and muddy trails
  • Gorgeous views, howler monkeys, and meeting the indigenous community

Tip: Bring a swimsuit – there are natural pools and rivers perfect for a jungle dip!

Costs & Booking Info

  • Price Range: Tours typically cost between $350-500 USD, depending on duration and company
  • Duration: 4, 5, or 6 days (most people go for 4)
  • Included: Very good meals, good guides, accomodations, permits, and medical support
  • Departure: Daily from Santa Marta

Tip: Book through ethical companies that support the local Indigenous communities

What to pack (and what to leave behind)?

Light is right! Leave the rest in storage at your hostel in Santa Marta!

Here are your essentials:

Good hiking shoes (that can get soaked)
Flip-flops for showering
Bug spray (a must!)
Quick-dry clothes
Flashlight or headlamp
Swimwear & towel
Water bottle (refillable – water is provided)
Toilleteries
Medication (there were quite some stomach problems in our group)
Optional: Snacks & Cash money

The Final Climb

After days of sweat and river crossings, you’ll reach the 1200 stone steps that lead to the Lost City itself. And there it is – stone terraces wrapped in mist, surrounded by jungle, full of history. You’ll walk among the ruins, watch the sun rise, listen to stories from your guide and the indigenous people, and feel that you earned this very special moment!

Good to know:

  • Respect the sacred nature of the site. Dress appropriately.
  • You’ll meet members of Indigenous people like the Kogi, who still guard the spiritual importance of the land
  • Prepare for basic conditions: jungle showers, no WiFi, and early nights
  • It’s safe, but remote – your guides are trained in first aid, and mules are available if needed in emergencies

Final Thoughts

The Lost City isn’t just a hike – it’s a journey back in time. You’ll walk ancient trails, eat by candlelight, and fall asleep to jungle sounds. It’s raw, real, and ridiculously rewarding. If you’re up for a little mud and magic… this is Colombia’s most unforgettable adventure.
