Looking for a perfect day trip from Medellín? You’ve just found it!
If Medellín is the beating heart of Antioquia, then Guatapé is its colorful soul. Just a couple of hours away, this postcard-perfect town is famous for its colorful buildings, decorative zócalos (storytelling wall art), and laid-back charm. It’s the kind of place made for wandering, taking photos, and soaking up the good vibes. Every house tells a story here, and every corner is bursting with color, flowers, and friendly faces!

Piedra El Peñol
Just outside the town rises La Piedra del Peñol, a 200-meter granite rock that dominates the landscape. And yes – you can climb it!
- Steps: 740 to the top
- Reward: Reaching the top felt like stepping into a painting – the turquoise lakes and tiny islands stretched endlessly below us
- Cost: ~25,000 COP (around 6 USD)
- How to get there? You can either take the bus from Medellín (Terminal Norte) that takes you to the rock in around 2 hours, or you can book a day tour including transport and entrance
Tip: Ask the bus driver to drop you off at the rock first, then take a colorful tuk-tuk to Guatapé after your climb

Things to do in Guatapé
- Wander the vibrant streets and admire the zócalos telling the town’s history
- Take a boat tour around the flooded landscape for a different perspective
- Visit Plaza de Zócalos, the town’s most colorful square
- Try the local specialty – freshly grilled trout with crispy arepas
Daytrip or Overnight?
Most travelers visit on a day trip from Medellín, but staying overnight means you get Guatapé almost to yourself once the tour buses leave. Watching the sunset over the lake is pure magic!
Tip: Book a hotel near the lake for top views and chill vibes
Final Thoughts
Guatapé is a splash of color in every sense – bright buildings, friendly people, and that view from the rock you’ll never forget! If Medellín is on your itinerary, make sure Guatapé and Piedra El Peñol are too – you’ll thank yourself later.
